North Macedonia

Known for historically being part of the Empire of Alexander the great, as well as being formally known as Macedonia, the Republic of North Macedonia has been one of the newest states in Europe. The territory was first conquered by the Romans and consequently came under the rule of the Byzantine Empire until the end of the 14th century when it came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. After the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, the territory came under rule of Bulgaria at the end of the 19th century. However, at the start of the 20th century, large parts of Macedonia came under the rule of Serbia and Greece after the defeat of Bulgaria during the Balkan wars. Macedonia later on became incorporated into the Republic of Yugoslavia in 1943, and after the dissolution of Yugoslavia, North Macedonia became an independent state in 1990 under the name of Macedonia. Since then, North Macedonia has been on a path towards NATO membership as well as membership of the European union. However, Greece has blocked access to these memberships because it went under the name of Macedonia which had a political and historical relevance to Greece. After changing its name to North Macedonia in 2018, it joined NATO and is on its way to become a member of the European union.
