At the start of the 21st century, the Honduran military made a coup d’état in which they deposed the Honduran president by order of the Supreme Court.

Known for its richness in resources as well as its many natural reserves, Honduras is full of untapped potential. Before contact with the Europeans, the territory was part of the Mayan Empire. From its discovery in 1502 until 1821, it was part of the Spanish Empire. From 1821 it was part of the Federation of central American states which combined Costa Rica El Salvador Nicaragua and Guatemala together with Honduras. After the Federation was dissolved at the end of the 1830s, Honduras became an independent state. Since then, Honduras has been invaded by the United States in order to quash political unrest. After the United States left, Honduras has seen several coups and dictatorships until the end of the 20th century when its first elections took place, and a pro-socialist government was elected. After a few decades of unrest due to political tensions as well as violent clashes between opposition groups, stability started to arise at the turn of the 21st century. .
The geography of Honduras can be divided up into a central mountain range that stretches throughout Honduras with the exception of its coastal areas. Most of the terrain is densely forested due to its location in the tropical sphere. It borders Guatemala to the northwest, the Caribbean Sea to the north, Nicaragua to its southeast, the Pacific Ocean to its south and El Salvador to its soutwest.
It is the 101st largest state in the world with a total surface of 113,054 square kilometers or 43,650 square miles.
It is the 131st state with the highest amount of water with 202 square kilometers or 77 square miles.

Honduras has two large rivers that flow throughout Honduras to the sea. These are the river Patuca and the river Aguan. It also has Lake Yojoa which is located in the center of Honduras and covers 0.18 percent of its total surface.

With an average temperature of 24.5 degrees Celsius or 76.1 degrees Fahrenheit, Honduras is the 72nd warmest state in the world. Its climate can be divided into a humid and warm climate to the north, a mild climate in the center and a hot and dry climate to the south.
The average high temperature is 29 degrees Celsius or 84.2 degrees Fahrenheit.
The average low temperature is 22.8 degrees Celsius or 73 degrees Fahrenheit.
Most of its rainfall occurs between the months of June and October and occurs on a regular basis during this period. On average, Honduras receives 186 centimetres or 73.3 inches of rainfall per year making it the 35th state with the highest amount of rainfall.
The capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa, is a home to around 1.3 million people. The capital that is closest located to Tegucigalpa is San Salvador of El Salvador with a distance of 203 kilometers or 126 miles. The capital that is furthest removed from Tegucigalpa is Jakarta Indonesia with a distance of 18,270 kilometers or 11,352 miles.
As a result of high unemployment rates as well as a large wealth disparity, Honduras is among the least developed states in the region. Aside from this, a large external debt as well as a political instability contribute to a slow economic growth. Around 25 percent of its economy consists of remittances, mainly from the United States, which is solely responsible for nearly 40 percent of all Honduran imports. Another large contributor to the economy is the agricultural sector which represents around 15 percent. Most of its export consists of bananas, coffee and shellfish which are mainly exported to Nicaragua and the United States which combined represent more than 50 percent of all exports.

Before its contact with European civilizations, Honduras was inhabited by the Maya people. As a result of the Spanish conquest, many Mayans have perished and their descendants are mainly located in the center of Honduras and make up around 10 percent of the population. As a result of centuries of contacts between Spanish settlers and the native population, the current population is a mix between Spanish and the indigenous people. With a total population of 9.6 million people, Honduras is the 93rd most populous state in the world.
It has the 97th highest population density in the world with 85 people per square kilometer or 220 people per square mile.
Migration from Honduras has been growing in recent decades. Currently, there are more than 800,000 people, or 8.7 percent of the population that have migrated to other states. Around 80 percent of all migrants have migrated to the United States with the goal of attaining a better quality of life.
Immigration to Honduras has been fairly limited to just over 35,000 people, or 0.39 percent of the total population. The main reason for migration to Honduras is remigration from Honduran citizens that have retired, or from investors.
With a literacy rate of 87.6 percent, Honduras is ranked as the 122nd most literate state in the world. Currently, the Honduran governments is investing heavily into its educational system in order to reduce the illiteracy rate.
Access to healthcare has been unequal throughout Honduras with just over 50 percent of the population having access to healthcare. Aside from limited access to healthcare, the Honduran government launched a new health plan in 2010 with only limited success. Within Honduras there are several health threats that range from communicable diseases such as HIV and malaria to limited access to healthcare due to curfews that are imposed by perpetrators of a military coup. Another notable health risk is the homicide rates which is the second highest in the world. Honduras has the 127th highest life expectancy in the world with an average age of 75.9 years. Women reach 78.1 years while men reach 73.6 years.
The government of Honduras guarantees the freedom of religion towards its officially recognized religions. Currently, only the Catholic church has been recognized as a religious institution.
With 87.7 percent of the population adhering to Christianity, Honduras is the 25th most Christian state in the world. The Roman Catholic Church is the largest denomination and was first introduced during the colonization period of the Spanish. Other denominations such as Protestantism were introduced later on, but has been representing a larger share of Christians in Honduras which has reached nearly 40 percent in 2020.
Islam is represented by 0.2 percent of the population, or around 10,000 people making it the 149th most Islamic state in the world. Most Islamic inhabitants have originated from the Levant region and migrated after the fall of the Ottoman Empire or after the Arab Israeli war. Currently there are two Islamic organizations in Honduras as well as one mosque.
There are no official Buddhist organizations in Honduras.
There are no official Hindu organizations in Honduras.
Around 1.14 percent of the population adheres to other religions. These are mainly descendants from the Maya population which still practice their religion today.
Irreligion is represented by 7.03 percent of the Honduran population.
