Immigration to Greece has largely been discouraged due to a lack of financial resources. These resources have been allocated to the vital support that is needed for refugees from the Middle East that have crossed the Mediterranean Sea and are located in Greece. Currently, around 11.13 percent or nearly 1.2 million people have migrated to Greece. The states of origin of these migrants are fairly evenly spread out throughout Europe and the Levant region with a notable high Albanian population that represents one third of all immigrants.
Greece has a literacy rate of 96.6 percent which makes it the 74th most literate state in the world. This is largely thanks to a compulsory educational system that is provided for free to all citizens between the ages of five and 16.
Greece has the 22nd highest life expectancy in the world with an average life expectancy of 82.8 years. Women reach 85.1 years while men reach 80.5 years. This is largely due to a healthy diet which is considered to be one of the healthiest in the world. One of the leading causes of death in Greece are heart related diseases such as strokes and coronary heart diseases as well as diseases that are mosquito borne. Religion is mainly dominated by Orthodox Christianity. Some minor tension exists between the Orthodox Greek population and the non-Orthodox Greek population in the form of suspicion towards each other, but overall, all religions coincide peacefully.
The Greek Orthodox Church is followed by nearly 90 percent of the total Greek population which makes it the 16th most Christian state in the world. Christianity plays a central part in daily life and is seen so by nearly 8 percent of the population.
Islam is followed by 5.4 percent of the population and consists of Muslims that settled in Greece during the Ottoman occupation as well as migrants coming from the Balkans, the Middle East and North Africa.

Judaism has been present in Greece since Roman times and has had many Jewish centres throughout the Byzantine and Ottoman Empire. However, when Greece was conquered by Nazi Germany, many Jews perished. Today, most Jews live in and around the larger Greek cities.
Around 0.1 percent of the population adheres to other religions. These are mainly Mormons, Seventh-day Adventists and followers of the Baha'i faith.

Around 750 BC, the territory of Greece existed as multiple city states that regularly went to war with each other. As a result of centuries of fighting, Greece became conquered by Alexander the great in the fifth century BC and later on became a province of the Roman empire., Greece became part of the Byzantine Empire until it was taken over by the Ottoman Empire in the second half of the 15th century. From the 15th century onwards Greece was under Ottoman rule, but proclaimed its independence in 1827. Since then, Greece has changed from a monarchy to a republic and has become part of the European union. .
Located in the most southeastern part of Europe, Greece consists of a large mainland and more than 3000 islands. It is part of the Balkan region of Europe. Its territory consists of high, densely forested mountains mainland with low lying valleys in between these mountains. To its north it borders Albania North Macedonia and Bulgaria and to the east it borders Turkey, and the southern and eastern part of Greece borders the Mediterranean Sea.

Since its accession to the European union, Greece has been one of the largest beneficiaries of EU funds which has been contributing around five percent of its GDP. After the economic crisis of 2008, the Greek economy faced a sovereign debt crisis which has led to the two several bail outs by the European emergency fund. As a result, Greece has had to implement heavy austerity measures which further dampened the Greek economy. Only in 2018 has Greece started to recover. Currently there is limited diversification in its economy which is largely made up of the exports of petroleum, textiles and agricultural products as well as a heavy reliance on its tourism sector. Most of its exports mainly go to other member states of the European union as well as Turkey and Cyprus. Most of its imports come from Germany, Italy and Russia as well as the import of petroleum from Iraq.

Historically, the land has been occupied by the Ottomans, the Romans and the Byzantines with each bringing their own people to the region. In recent history, there has been an influx of migrants coming from the Middle Eastern region due to political instability. Another large influx of migrants has been crossing the Mediterranean Sea and landed in Greece. These people are looking for economic opportunities as well as fleeing political instability.
