Named after the day of its discovery by Christopher Columbus, Sunday, the Commonwealth of Dominica is home to rare animal and plant species that are only found there. After its discovery in 1493, it was eventually claimed by the British in 1763 when it became one of the Caribbean hubs for the European slave trade. After gaining self-governance in 1967 and full autonomy in 1979, it still remains a member of the British Commonwealth. .
Its geography is mainly characterized by being densely forested with high hills and several rivers. As an island state in the Caribbean, Dominica is known to have several active volcanoes as well as being a likely to be struck by hurricanes. The states that are within its direct proximity are the French overseas territories of Guadalupe to its north and Martinique to its south. It has a total land area of 755 square kilometers or 291 square miles. This makes Dominica the 173rd largest state in the world being slightly smaller than Bahrain and slightly larger than Tonga.
With a total surface area of 751 square kilometers or 290 square miles it is the 188th largest state in the world, making it slightly smaller than Andorra and slightly larger than Singapore.

There are several water sources that are being supplied by rainfall. With many lakes, rivers and smaller ponds, Dominica is considered to be a water rich state.
With a warm and humid climate which is largely present throughout the year, the climate of Dominica is characterized by being tropical. The average temperature is 26.7 degrees Celsius or 74.6 degrees Fahrenheit which makes Dominica the 85th warmest state in the world.
Its warmer period is from June to November when the average temperature goes up to 28 degrees Celsius or 82.3 degrees Fahrenheit.
Its cooler period is during its dry season from January until March when the average temperature reaches 25.7 degrees Celsius or 78.2 degrees Fahrenheit.
With an annual precipitation of 193.7 centimetres or 76.3 inches, Dominica is the 31st state with the highest amount of rainfall. Rain is fairly evenly spread out throughout the year, with a higher amount of rainfall between June to November.
The capital of Dominica, Roseau, is home to 17,000 people. The capital that is closest located to Roseau is Castries St. Lucia with a distance of 143 kilometres or 89 miles. The capital that is furthest removed from Roseau is Dili of East Timor with a distance of 18,967 kilometres or 11,785 miles.
The economy of Dominica is mainly focused on the export of petroleum related products as well as agricultural products, mainly fruits. Hurricanes have a direct influence on its the GDP. It is estimated that the large hurricane from 2009 had destroyed a large amount of banana plantations which protracted its economy by nearly 20 percent. External debt is also a large burden on the economy of Dominica. In order to counter this, the government of Dominica has agreed to make budget cuts as well as attempting to diversify its economy. One of these diversifications is tourism which has been growing in the last decade. It is also trying to establish an offshore banking system. The majority of its export products are agricultural products, petroleum related products and medical instruments. These are mainly exported to Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts and Nevis and Jamaica which combined make up nearly 50 percent of total exports. Most of its imports comes from the United States which solely represents more than 35 percent.

Its GDP is the 156th highest in the world and is estimated to be US$551 million which represents 0.001 percent of total global GDP.
Its GDP per square kilometer is US$730,600 or US$1.9 million per square mile. This makes Dominica the 79th highest GDP per surface area.
Its GDP per capita is the 81st highest in the world and stands at US$7600.

Because Dominica used to be a central hub for the European states trade, controlled by the British, the majority of its population is inhabited by people of African descent. Other minorities are from European descent as well as people from India. A small minority is the native population that has been living in Dominica before the European colonization. Its official language is English and with a total population of just over 72,000 people it is the 186th most populous state in the world.
Its population density is the 91st highest with 95 people per square kilometer or 247 people per square mile.
More than 60,000 people, or 84.9 percent of its current population have emigrated to other states. The United States represents more than half of total and migration followed by the United Kingdom, France and Canada. Emigration is mainly due to economic reasons.
Immigration to Dominica has been fairly low with around 5000 people, or nearly 7 percent of the total population being immigrants. Around 60 percent of immigrants are native Haitians that have fled the economic circumstances of Haiti. The remaining migrants come from the United States and the United Kingdom and mainly consists of economic migrants which have re-migrated back to Dominica.
The literacy rate is the 114th highest in the world with 91.4 percent of Dominicans being able to read. This number is likely to increase in the coming decades as attendance rates have been increasing over the last decades. One drawback is the lack of finance for its education system which leads to poor educational quality.
Aside from external health risks such as hurricanes and volcanoes, the health risks to the Dominican population mainly consists of substance abuse which has been fairly high throughout the population as well as communicable diseases such as the Zika virus. The average life expectancy is 73.5 years with women reaching 76.7 years and men reaching 70.6 years.
Freedom of religion is provided by the Dominican government and is granted to all religions with the exception of religious practices that are contrary to Dominican law. An example of this is the use of cannabis by the Rastafari religion. In recent years, there has been some leniency by the Dominican government which has set limitations on the amount of cannabis that can be legally owned by Rastafari’s.
With 93.5 percent of the population adhering to Christianity, Dominica is the eighth most Christian state in the world.

Islam is followed by 0.1 percent of the population and mainly consists of foreign students. In the last two decades a mosque has been erected in the capital and the Muslim community has gained formal recognition by the Dominican government.

There are no known Jewish organizations in Dominica.
Other religions, which are mainly represented by Jehovah witnesses and Rastafari's are free to practice their religion. There are no reports of religious conflicts between any religion in Dominica.
Around 0.36 percent of the population does not adhere to any faith.
